Destabilizing Divergences in Supergravity Theories

چکیده

We study the stability of the gauge hierarchy in hidden-sector supergravity theories. We show that a destabilizing tadpole can appear if a theory has a gaugeand global-symmetry singlet with renormalizable couplings to the visible fields. We also find a quadratically divergent two-loop contribution to the supersymmetric effective potential. This term illustrates the difficulty of using the “LHC mechanism” to control quadratic divergences in theories with Planck-scale vevs.

Destabilizing Divergences in Supergravity Theories at Two Loops

We examine the stability of the mass hierarchy in hidden-sector supergravity theories. We show that a quadratically divergent tadpole can appear at two loops, even in minimal supergravity theories, provided the theory has a gaugeand global-symmetry singlet with renormalizable couplings to the visible fields. This tadpole can destabilize the hierarchy. We also find a quadratically divergent two-...

Bound-state gravity from higher derivatives

In certain Lorentz-covariant higher-derivative field theories of spins ≤1, would-be ultraviolet divergences generate color-singlet poles as infrared divergences. Absence of higher-order poles implies ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills with bound-state supergravity, in close analogy with open string theory. 1 mailto:[email protected] 2 mailto:[email protected]

On Quadratic Divergences in Supergravity, Vacuum Energy and the Supersymmetric Flavor Problem

We examine the phenomenological consequences of quadratically divergent contributions to the scalar potential in supergravity effective Lagrangians. We focus specifically on the effect of these corrections on the vacuum configuration of scalar fields in softly-broken supersymmetric theories and the role these corrections play in generating non-diagonal soft scalar masses. Both effects can only ...

On the Relationship between Yang-Mills Theory and Gravity and its Implication for Ultraviolet Divergences

String theory implies that field theories containing gravity are in a certain sense ‘products’ of gauge theories. We make this product structure explicit up to two loops for the relatively simple case of N = 8 supergravity four-point amplitudes, demonstrating that they are ‘squares’ of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills amplitudes. This is accomplished by obtaining an explicit expression for the D-dimensio...

On Cancellations of Ultraviolet Divergences in Supergravity Amplitudes

Concrete calculations have pointed out that amplitudes in perturbative gravity exhibit unanticipated cancellations taming their ultraviolet behaviour independently of supersymmetry. Similar ultraviolet behaviour of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills and N = 8 maximal supergravity has explicitly been observed until three loops. These cancellations can be connected to two manifest features of gravitational t...
